Kindness

Kindness is the next piece in the "Putting the Pieces Together" series at our church.
Proverbs 11:17: Your kindness will reward you,but your cruelty will destroy you.

It is amazing what a kind word or a kind smile can do for someone who is hurting. We sometimes underestimate the power of those things and forget how significant they can be.

Ephesians 4:31
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

Galations 5 :19-23
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Proverbs 12:25:
25 Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.

The pastor reminds us that we are to let God take care of it when someone wrongs us. We must not fall victim to retaliation and unkindness.

Starbucks Coffee Deal

Target is having a great Starbucks coffee deal! They are on sale for $7 a bag. Buy 2 bags of the Starbucks Coffee and get a $5 gift card! That makes them 4.50 a bag! You will never find them for that cheap...heck, you might not find any coffee that cheap!

Also, at Starbucks (the coffee shop) if you buy your coffee there, you receive a free cup of coffee! So, that would be a nice little indulgence there! (It won't be as cheap as at Target though!)

Kroger!

Kroger is running a deal right now....$10 gift card when you purchase $50 or more in gift cards for Best Buy, from Kroger, in one transaction. I am sure we all have that "Best Buy" person on our list we are buying for! Use the gift card to purchase their gift and get $10 in groceries too!
Thanks Marcy at Stretching a Buck!
Click here for the other deals at Kroger this week! Thanks Marcy!

Chicken Pot Pie

So, I was thinking about what I wanted to make for dinner and I wanted soup..well, if I have soup one more night, I think my husband will freak out, so I had to try something new.
Chicken Pot Pie....I remember when I was young and my mo would make the frozen ones for us and I loved them! Well, I knew I could do this homemade, so I thought and came up with this:

  • 2 Bone in chicken breasts cooked in crock pot on low for 6 hours
  • 1 carrot, peeled and diced
  • 1 potato peeled and diced
  • 1 celery rib diced
  • 2 tbsp. butter, splash of olive oil
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 2 cans chicken broth
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tube of crescent rolls
1. Cook carrot, celery and potato in butter and oil until tender.
2. Add flour, cook for a minute or two.
3. Add chicken broth and season with salt and pepper. Cook until thickens.
4. Add pulled chicken, shred as big or small as you like.
5. Add crescent rolls on top. Bake on 350 until rolls brown. (remember, everything in the pot pie is already cooked, so this shouldn't take long!

That is it! How easy is that. This really is a versatile recipe. I know this can be done even easier with creamed soups from Campbell's. I have lots of carrots and such from soups, so I wanted to be sure to use them! You can add canned veggies, frozen veggies (if I had corn, it would've hit the pot for sure!)
I put it together during the kids quiet time and now I will throw it in about 30 min. before dinner time! I will post pic when it is done!

Recipes

So, I got a question from a reader and it asked if I would post my favorite recipe. Thanks so much for inquiring about this, food is my favorite thing in the world! My life revolves around it and I love to cook! This is so hard to answer, I do not have 1 favorite recipe. I have many! So, I decided I would start cooking some of my favorites and post them!
I am sooo in winter, soup and pasta and roasted things right now, so they will be those types of recipes! I have some great ones though!

What I do want to post right now, though, is the simplest recipe you'll ever make for company, a party, etc. It is a crowd pleaser and I owe it to my s-i-l!

Dill dip:
1 cup sour cream
1 cup mayo
Dill
Seasoned salt

Mix well. I add dill and seasoned salt and taste, add and taste. I would say start with a small palmful of both!
That's it! I always have those things on hand...chop up some veggies and you are set! This is so much beter than the store bought dill dip too!

30% of At Gap!

I received an e-mail from Gap and I think it is a great deal! Nov. 13- Nov. 16, I can go into the Gap, Gap Outlet, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Banana Republic Factory Stores and save 30%! This also works online.
Here's the best part. They will put 5% of the amount you spend to your favorite non-profit!
Click here to get the online order code or print the coupon!
It says once you pick your favorite non-profit, it will give you another offer to share with friends and family!

Be sure to get out though, oh and they told me to share this, so feel free to forward it on!!!

Old Navy Does it Again!

Old Navy is at it again! They are really pushing for people to come shop on the weekends!
I saw this ad on television (during Grey's Anatomy, love it!), so I do not know all of the details exactly. Here is what I do know....
  • Half price on all outer wear. It is for one week, but I do not know the exact days. This should be a great deal though. Click here for the link! Everyone could use an exra puffy coat!
  • $1 hats and scarves! Yes, that is $1!!!! (These are in store on Sat. only) I will buy one for everyone I know...think about it, wrap a scarf around a gift, wrap something in a hat...I mean, this is a great little extra for gifts for Christmas! Be creative...=)
I love Old Navy! Oh and Kroger too!

More Mega Sale

I know, I know, quit with the Mega sale...right?
Hopefully, I will...at least my husband thinks I should!
I just wanted to point out one more thing. Hefty one zip lock bags are on the deal (not pictured in the circular) for 1.50.
That would be -.50 for the 10 item mega sale. We also have .55 off coupons from the paper (gosh, I don't know which one, I just know they are from the Sunday paper). So, that makes them FREE!
These are great freezer bags! So, while you are cooking those Christmas cookies with all of the sugar, evaporated and condensed milk and chocolate chips (to name few!) throw them in these great freezer bags!

Walgreens Ink!

If you are like me, you are quickly burning through your printer ink printing all of these online coupons! These replacements are so expensive too....I always wondered why printer ink was so expensive? Anyways, I went to Walgreens (by the photo shop) and they refill them there for 10.65! That includes tax.
I know they sell kits that you can refill them yourself....I asked the woman working and she said it was a messy process. I am guessing doing this with kids hanging on your legs might make it even messier! =)
So, I opted for them to do it! It was easy, fast (15 minutes) and very convenient! I am happy!
If you have refilled them yourself or have any other options, I would love to hear about it!

Giant Eagle 11/6-11/12

Here are the Giant Eagle deals for the week. Again, courtesy of Stretching a Buck. Have you printed the coupons off of coupons.com yet? They reset on the first, so you should be able to print tons of great new coupons! These are really worth it and you can click on what you want to print! Please check it out on the right side of the blog!!!
Thanks again Marcy for the great deal posts!!!

10 Item Mega Sale

So, I have been to Kroger about 4 times in 2 days! I can not get enough. When you are walking out with 10 things for $5, how can you help yourself?
So, I have been noticing there are some things on the mega item event that are not listed in the paper! Two things I have noticed are dish washing soap (not sure which brand exactly) and some sugar free candies (there were coupons in the paper last weekend for them! I did not cut them, I just did not think I would use them!) Oh well, my point is, if you have some time to kill (because we all do...right?) you might want to walk through and look and see what is on sale. Take notes, go back home, check coupons and come up with a game plan! Please let me know if you find some extra good deals! I think I may go in the morning, so I will post if I find some new deals!

Evaporated Milk

So, Kroger is letting you "steal" the deals this week! So much fun shopping there. Getting stuff for free without stealing it....great times! Thanks Kroger!
So, one of the things on sale is the evaporated milk. Well, I love to cook, but I am not so much of a baker. I would pick a hearty dinner over pies and cookies any day! I, however, am stocking up on this evaporated milk. It is not just for baking. I have used it in mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, to name a few. So, even if you do not bake, buy these evaporated milk cans and use them in casseroles and things like that! Save the milk in the carton for drinking! (I stole that from their new ad campaign!)
On another side note, from experience, the 10 item mega event usually lasts 2 weeks in a row. (Gosh I hope I am not jinxing myself here!). So, while I cannot guarantee it, I believe it may go for another week...hopefully!

Election

So today was a very important day in history! We (saving sisters) actually got to vote together! How exciting! We did not, however, get to go get all the freebies after....would've been nice though! Anyways, how exciting for us to be a part of history! My daughter went with us, I am so excited to tell her, when she studies this in her high school history book.."You were there with me, on that history making day!" It is very strange, but very satisfying at the same time! I am so glad I got out there and did vote....I hope everyone got a chance to!
No matter what happens, who wins or how the future goes, this day was history in the making!!

Great Clothing Deals

I hit up a few outlet stores today and I found some great deals! If you are lucky enough to have an "outlet mall" by your house, be sure to try and make it there! Children's Place had awesome deals.
  • 1.99 long sleeve thermals
  • 3.99 coat vests
  • 1.99 accessories (hats, belts, etc.)
  • 4.99 for shoes
Gosh, the list goes on and on! Old Navy, Carter's and Gap also had some great deals on kids coats!

So, I was feeling a little bored with my daughters wardrobe and was trying to think of a way to "cuten" it up! Well, while at the outlet stores, I found a lot of tank top dresses and things like that. They were anywhere from 1.99-3.99! Not bad. Well, I loved them and realized I could put turlenecks or long sleeve t-shirts under them to "winterize"! Throw them with some jeans, leggings, or sweater tights and I have one stylin little girl on the cheap!!! Try it....it is very cute!!

Peace in the Midst of Challenges, Changes, and Chaos

Hello All-
Yesterday's sermon was so incredibly inspiring!! We are currently doing a 9 part study which is entitled "Putting the Pieces Together". Yesterday was about PEACE!

The pastor began his sermon reminding us that worry and anxiety lead to fear, and don't allow peace to encompass our hearts. He then continued with, "frustration robs us, and blocks the holy spirit from bringing us peace". Wow, these statements are such good reminders to us as Christians....that God wants us to unload these frustrations, worries, and anxieties unto Him. I believe that it is an ongoing process, it takes time, faith, trust, prayer, etc. It's not just saying the words, it's reaching deep down into your heart... honestly, and whole-heartedly surrendering all of it to God. I am reminded of a hymn entitled, "I Surrender All". The pastor reminded us that He truly wants us to surrender EVERYTHING to Him. We have to rely on our Faith and trust in God to do so.

Romans 5
1Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Galatians 5:22-23:
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

We are to be peach-makers, aim for peace, strive for peace, and encourage peace, in our own lives and other lives that we touch.

Isaiah 48:22:
22There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.

There is no doubt that each and everyone one of us experiences some type of hurt at some point. Sometimes it becomes too much to handle and we can't see past the hurt. I think that there is so much wisdom in knowing that we can give it to God.

Ephesians 5:18:
18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

As a final thought, if we don't have peace with God then how are we to have peace in our lives?

Philippians 4:6-7:
6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Our hope is that everyone who reads this will seek peace through God, and unload all of your troubles and worries to Him! =)
Have a great week.

I've been Tagged

I have been tagged twice! These tags have come from Tips of a Mom of 3 and Thrifty in the Cincy. These happen to be 2 of my favorite blogging resources! Thanks ladies for including me!
Here's what I am supposed to do:
Post the rules of the game:

The Rules:
1. To link the tagger and provide the rules on your blog
2. Share 7 facts about yourself
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving names as well as links to their blogs
4. Let them know they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blogs.

Seven things about me:
  1. I love reading cookbooks. I do not really read novels, I read cookbooks instead, from cover to cover!
  2. My favorite thing to do is also cooking! (See a pattern here?)
  3. I married a man I was friends with for about 5 years first! This really lets you get to know someone! He had nothing to prove!
  4. I have a degree in surgical asst. but as soon as I graduated, I never wanted to do that, so I didn't! Surgeons can be "demanding" sometimes. I know they have a difficult job! They do a great job! It just wasn't for me, but I finished!
  5. My favorite color is green!
  6. My ideal Christmas would be nestled in a cottage in a ski town with snow everywhere and my whole family there. In-laws, sisters, grandmas, grandpas, etc. I love fireplaces and being warm and this just sounds so cozy and warm!
  7. I am addicted to Hollywood gossip sites. Everyone has to have their "thing" right?

Now the seven I m tagging (This is tough, most of my favorite blogs have been tagged!) This is fun!
  1. Mom on a Mission
  2. Addicted to Coupons
  3. Bargain Briana
  4. A Recipe a Day
  5. My Italian Grandmother
  6. Stretching a Buck
  7. Mom's Toolbox
These are some of my favorite blogs, so be sure to check them out!

Charity

BeCentsAble has an awesome post about doing "charity on the cheap"! I never would have thought to plan this through out the year, but if you do, you could donate nice boxes for under 3.00. Check it out here and get into the season of "giving".
Again, please read this. It would enable anyone to give and so many children will receive nothing this holiday season! It could make a lot of kid's and parent's days!

Free Tacos!

Don't forget to go to your local Taco Bell and get your free taco today! From 2-6, everyone receives one free taco, no purchase necessary!

Yankee Candle Sale

All tarts and votives are $1!!!! Yes, $1!!!! This is 50% off normal price. I love these. I can have a different smell in my house depending on my mood. When you purchase the large ones, you are stuck with that one smell, but these are so versatile! They really do last for awhile too! So, get out there and get those votives and tarts...just think...stocking stuffers! I always see tart burners and such at dollar stores, so these really could be cute gifts, not just stocking stuffers!
I believe you need a coupon, you can print it from this site here.
I am not sure if there is a limit? I didn't see one, but I also did not look very well. You can order online too and there is a code on the same above link.

Ulta

If you have the pleasure of having an Ulta Beauty store near you, consider yourself lucky! They often run great promotions, if you like to splurge once in awhile on salon products. I get a mailer about once a month, sometimes every 2 weeks, but there are always great deals! They also give so many "gifts" away for free! If you are purchasing perfume, cologne, make-up, hair products, etc. I would definitely check here first. Chances are good, you can save and get a free bag or something! Here are some of the good promotions going on (sale goes from Oct. 19-Nov.1):

  • There is a $5 off coupon a $10 purchase on the front of the current mailer! This is a great deal when you combine with sale prices! The below deal will only be $19.99!
  • They have a 65 piece make-up collection for 24.99! I really do not think you'll have to buy make-up again! This is a 195.00 value! I am not one for a lot of make-up, but the rare occasion I actually wear something nice, I like to dress it up a bit. Includes 29 eyeshadows, 12 lip colors, 6 cheek colors, 4 full size lipsticks, 2 mini lip-glosses, gosh, the list goes on and on! AND, it comes in a 3 tier leatherette case!
  • Ulta lotions are 5 for $20! I love the Simply Clean and Coconut Lime!! Worth it!
  • OPI nailpolish are buy 2 get one free!
  • They have a salon in the store! Here's the deal there....go with a friend! Buy one haircut, get one free! If you add a treatment, you get a clutch or gift bag free! Make it a girl day!
I love this store and love saving here. I have never used their salon services, but would love to hear if you have! They always run good deals on these too! Just look in your mailbox!

Chex Mix

I received my "Simple and Delicious" magazine today, (which I love, by the way!), and I was thumbing through it and they had recipes for Chex mix in there. Now, I have never been a fan of Chex mix, always thought it was sort of bland, but, this is not the Chex mix from the past. So, click here to see "modern day" Chex mixes. As I am sure most of you know, there have been numerous chances to get Chex for very little! These are going to be great and inexpensive at holiday parties! Have someone on your list you need to get a small gift for? This would be delicious in a mason jar, add ribbon, cute little card with the recipe and you are set! Have these at the home to hand out to holiday visitors! This would be convenient, easy and inexpensive!

This sort of brings me to my next subject. Holiday baking...... I have been getting many coupons for brown sugar, sugar, corn syrup, etc. I also have been getting some great deals on chocolate chips, etc. (Right now at Meijer, Nestle chips are on sale 2/$5. There is also a $1 off coupon...reat deal!) So, I have been purchasing a little here and there to help with the expense of my holiday cooking and baking! Start stocking up now!

Fire Safety

This is just a friendly reminder about a great safety tip that should be discussed in your family! While I took my child to the doctor for a routine check-up, she asked if we had a "fire-safety plan". I admitted that I did not, had never really thought about it. It is so easy and could save your life and your children's. All you need to do is sit with your spouse/significant other, and decide who would get which child and a place to meet up. Think about it, the house is on fire, time is of the essence and you have a child with you, but are at the front of the house and your sig. other is with your other child/children behind the house, you do not know they are there. You could make an irrational decision and decide to go in the home to look, etc. This alleviates confusion. Get a plan and review it, so if (and I hope it won't!) it happens, you know exactly what to do!
Now, hopefully, this will be what works for me (hopefully we will not be using our "plan" though!)

Double Savings..update

So, I went to Kroger and purchased the Febreeze Noticeables kit. I also purchased the candle. They scanned my Kroger card, which gave me $5 off the Noticeable and $2 off the candle. I handed him the paper coupons for $5 off the noticeable and $1 off the candle. It was beeping and he went to customer service and asked and they told him it was fine. He manually entered both. So, I know it is "legal". But, the only reason it beeped, I think, is because the $10 off the Febreeze Noticeable was giving an overage. I do not think it beeps if there is no overage....just a little tidbit! It did not beep when I made my purchase last night, and it was a simple deal.....no overage!

Double Savings Yeah!

I did the double e-coupon and paper coupon at Kroger last night and it absolutely does work! SO, there are Febreeze noticeables on sale for 6.89. There is a $5 e-coupon and a $5 coupon from the paper, so it would be an overage! I am gonna post the deals from this and shortcuts also! I know off the top of my head there is a $1 off the e-coupon on P and G and $1 off from the paper on Crest. It is 2/$4 this week, so they would be free
Only bad thing (if there is one) is you only have 1 e-coupon! So, you can only work a deal once. But, it might be good because you wont arrive to empty shelves from people who had 10 coupons! =)

Giant Eagle Deals

Here are the Giant Eagle deals for the week of 10/9-10/15. Check it out here. Thanks to Marcy at Stretching a Buck! Check out her blog!!!

Double Savings

This is more of a question. The febreeze noticeables are on sale at Kroger for 8 something? There is a 5.00 off coupon on the P and G coupons you load onto your Kroger shopper card. There is also a 5.00 off coupon from the BrandSaver. My question is, will this really take both off? I so, this would definitely leave them free with some overage. There are a lot of other doubles worth mentioning:
  • Swiffer Endust...2.50 off total
  • Febreeze Candles... 3.00 off total
  • Pampers Wipes...1.50 off total
  • Pampers diapers...3.00 off total
  • Natural Instincts hair color...3.00 off total
  • Herbal Essences...4.00 off 2 total
  • Crest toothpaste....2.00 off total (it is on sale 2 for 4.00 (FREE!)
I was wondering if anyone has done this and if it works. I am going to use it later today, I will report if it works or not. I know they take both, but it kind of seems too good to be true.
Please let me know if you know this works and have done it!

Works for Me Wednesday

Here I go again! My "Works for me Wednesday" this week, again, has to do with unpleasant smells. I cannot stand unpleasant smells and work hard to eliminate them in my home. I posted a couple weeks ago about kitchen sponges and how to eliminate odors there!
Well, this one has to do with chicken. I cook chicken almost daily! When I prepare chicken to cook, I am very thorough on cleaning the chicken, cutting off any excess fat, etc. Well, I would throw the unused portion of chicken in my trash can. Leaving uncooked chicken in a trash can for even a short time could end up very unpleasant. Then, the trash would sit in the outdoor can for a time, depending on our trash pick up day, and that would be unpleasant outside! I also tried the disposal, but for some reason, it seemed as though I could never get it completely gone in the drain and smells would start to come from the sink. I quit doing that due to problems from it. So, I needed another solution.
Well, here it is...I have a plastic container with a lid in my freezer that I pull out when I am cleaning chicken. I put any excess that I remove from the chicken, place it in the container, put the lid back on and pop it back in the freezer! This eliminates all of these offensive odors. The chicken stays frozen until trash pick-up! When we put trash out, I simply empty the container in the trash, and it goes out and is gone in a very short time!
Check out all of the helpful hints over at Rocks in My Dryer!

Soups On!

Here is our project for the week. We are picking 3 soups with common ingredients and having a "soup making night" one night this week. We are going to make huge double batches and split them up and freeze them. This will save time and money because these three soups have similiar or the same ingredients, but are very different in taste. Soup is so easy to reheat and delicious too! We are going to make it a "girl's night" of sorts and possibly sip on a glass of wine while we cook!
Here's what we are thinking:
  1. Smoky-Spicy Sweet Potato Soup by Rachael Ray. We had this on Sunday night and could not get enough! Yummy!
  2. French Onion
  3. Some sort of a rotini, tomato, vegetarian soup
We will post pics and recipes when all is said and done!

Free Stuff

MEIJER
So, I went to a few stores and got a few things for free. Dixie napkins are on the 10/10 sale at Meijer. There was a .50 off coupon recently. This made them free! They are cute too! They come in a little box, almost a dispenser, you can set on your table! Thrifty in the Cincy talks about it here.

Johnson and Johnson band aids are on sale for .99 too. There was also a coupon recently for .50 off. When it doubles, they are free. Be careful though, some of the band aids are not marked on sale, but when I scanned them, they were on sale. All of the ones that were marked were sold out, so I tried one of the other ones and, to my surprise, it was on sale!

WALMART

Purex has a new fabric softener, there has been a lot of coupons lately for it. I found it at Walmart for 2.99. There have been some $1 off coupons, so 1.99 for 52 loads! Worth a shot, I'll let you know how it is! Smells so good though!

CVS
There is a great deal at CVS. Buy $20 worth of Tylenol/Motrin products, get $10 in ECB's. I am definitely doing this. Seeing as cold season is upon us, there can never be too much Motrin and Tylenol in the house when you have young kids! There are so many coupons out there for these products also, so that would make the deal even sweeter!

Premieres are continuing!

On Thurs. Oct 9 at 8:30 there is a show airing on NBC called Kath and Kim. This is one of the ones I have been waiting for. It stars Molly Shannon and Selma Blair. These are two wonderful actresses, I love them! SO, I am so excited for this premiere. I really like 30 minute shows, they are easy to fit in!
There is also a premiere at 9:30 on NBC called SNL on Thursday Night. This sounds great. I love SNL, but, like I said before, I can't stay up to watch it! So, I think I will be tuning in to watch this also!

Experience Columbus..Oct 10th-13th

Experience Columbus is Oct.10-13, If you live in or near the Columbus area, this is a great time to get out and do some fun family things! There are tons of dining deals and attraction deals...50% off admission to the zoo, aquarium, Cosi (for adults), and the list goes on and on! This is definitely a great time to take the kids to some attractions or get a sitter and have a "date" night with your hubby! I think there is something for everyone there!

Culvers!

Yummy! Culvers is having their famous "butter burgers" for $1 today! It is celebration of their 24 years in business. These burgers are worth full price, so I will be taking the kiddos there today for some awesome burgers! There is a limit of 5 though, but hey, 5 is alot! Enjoy!

The Mercy of God

Hello, All- Yesterday's service was very near and dear to my heart. The pastor talked about God's mercy and how He always shows up for us even though we are so undeserving. I have personally seen God show up in my life when I needed him most. Four years ago (almost to the date) my father passed away and talk about needing God...did I ever. God gave me strength to get through it and the peace and healing to finally come to a point where I was able to make it through an entire day without breaking down in tears. Don't get me wrong...I still have my days and moments when it overcomes me..and I loose control of those emotions!!

However, were it not for God showing up and embracing me...I would have never been able to put that first smile on my face after his passing.

It is the Holy Spirit that reminds me of the great times that we had together and how blessed I was to spend 21 years with him. That is more than some people get...and I will cherish every memory. God also reminds me that I have to get past the grief in order to enjoy the people that are still here in my life. He also blessed me with a husband who's comforting arms were right there around me every time it overcame me. Again, it is not my strength that got me through it is God's strength and His mercy!! The scripture listed below was discussed in the service..and talks about not only mercy, but also judgement. Please read..and let it sink into your heart.

Titus 3:4-7

4 But the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared. 5 He saved us. It wasn't because of the good things we had done. It was because of his mercy. He saved us by washing away our sins. We were born again. The Holy Spirit gave us new life.
6 God poured out the Spirit on us freely because of what Jesus Christ our Savior has done. 7 His grace made us right with God. So now we have received the hope of eternal life as God's children.

I Timothy 1:15-16

15 Here is a saying that you can trust. It should be accepted completely. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
And I am the worst sinner of all. 16 But for that very reason, God showed me mercy. And I am the worst of sinners. He showed me mercy so that Christ Jesus could show that he is very patient. I was an example for those who would come to believe in him. Then they would receive eternal life.

James 2:13

13 Those who have not shown mercy will not receive mercy when they are judged. To show mercy is better than to judge.

One of my favorite dinners!

This is one of my favorite dinners, to prepare and to eat! I think it may be the easiest one to make, it holds well, I can cook some before hand, etc. I love it!
These are your ingredients (above).
  • 1 package chicken
  • Iron Chef ginger orange sauce (found in the specialty section of the grocery store). This is so delicious and a "must" for this recipe. I can "jazz" it up or just use it out of the bottle!
  • Dried cranberries
  • Cashews
  • Mandarin oranges
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, diced (not pictured)
  • Here's some other things I put it occasionally: Fresh diced peppers, crushed red pepper flakes, pineapple, fresh ginger, hot sauce, soy sauce, orange marmelade.
You can mix and match as you like. I kind of change it up whenever I make it, depending on what is in the pantry. I love putting fresh peppers in, great way to get some veggies in there!

The steps are simple:
  • Saute garlic (ginger too, if you are using it) in olive oil for a few minutes
  • Add chicken (peppers would go in when chicken is almost done), saute until cooked through
  • Add sauce
  • If I am making this earlier in the day for that evening, I would only add those ingredients, then add the rest when I was reheating or about 10 minutes before serving. BUT, this is so easy, you can add whatever whenever. I do not think it can be "messed up"!
The result is a delicious, re-heatable, versatile dish! My young children eat this like crazy! They are getting chicken, veggies, nuts, fruit (cranberries), all in one meal! I serve it with rice, they eat it without, but it is so popular, I have begun making it with 2 packs of chicken so we can have leftovers too!

Giant Eagle

Here are the Giant Eagle deals for the week of 10/02-10/09. They are courtesy of Stretching a Buck. Be sure to stop by her awesome blog here! She puts the coupon links and everything on there for optimal savings! Be sure to click on the coupons.com bar on the side of our blog to print some valuable coupons too!

Old Navy Sale

Old navy is having another big sale this weekend. It is coined the "1492" sale. They are having over 1,492 items on sale for 14.92 or less. It also said "get one two or three items for 14.92 also". I think this may be worth checking out!
I am not seeing it on the website, I saw it while I was watching my show last night! See, it pays to watch television! Oh and Lipstick Jungle is so good! I love it!

Caramel Apples!

So, I guess we are on the subject of preschool....my last post, so I thought it would be good to put a post about our class "treat". We were able to bring a treat in, on behalf of my son. It was his turn. I am sure many schools do this, taking turns, letting children "share" something with the class. Well, I toiled over this decision. I don't know why, but I could not think of what to bring? No nuts, candy, cupcakes, etc.; there goes all my ideas! Then I figured it out! Caramel apples! Healthy, not too boring, cute, seasonal, and frugal!
Well, we made them (he got to help), and they were so easy! We bought caramels with sticks in the bag. All you do is melt caramel and a few tbsp. water on the stove, dip and put on buttered wax paper. Refrigerate and that's it! I wrapped them in more wax paper with bows (to make them pretty). All in all, I think this is gonna be a great snack....so, if you are out of ideas on something similiar...maybe this is an idea you might be able to use!

Reflection

Ok, maybe I am getting a little "soft", my oldest child is sleeping in his own bed now...it is causing me to reflect about him. He is kind of growing up. Now I know a lot of children never slept with mom and dad, so they have always had their own beds, but my son has always slept with us...this sleeping alone thing is a big step forward for him! Me also, I kind of miss the little guys knees in my back, in some crazy twisted way!
So, we were in our local grocery store the other day and we saw his preschool teacher, (wow, I love preschool...some quiet time!). Anyways, she said "hi" to him and he acted shy. She said "I know you are not shy!". This hit me so big.. she is the only person who has a special relationship with him that I do not have! She knows a side of him I will never see! Sure, they let you come to the class if you would like, but they also guarantee they will act differently! She sees a side of him I have never and will never see! It is so strange. I have been with him, I am thinking literally every waking and sleeping, for that matter, moment of his life! I understand everything he's done, why he's done it and can predict what he is going to do next in almost any situation. Sure, he's stayed at grandma and papa's, but I usually get a pretty detailed and honest report of all the funny things that took place, if he listened, etc. This doesn't happen to the same extent in preschool.
My reflection, I guess, is my baby boy is growing up! He is out there acting independently, doing who knows what, saying who knows what, (hopefully, not some things he's said at home!), acting, playing, etc. and he doesn't have me there correcting him! It is weird, but great at the same time....one thought that keeps going through my mind is "I hope I did a good job!".
We prepare our children for this and the decisions he's making now are so small compared to the big picture, teen yrs., etc. but, he is making independent decisions! It is so bitter sweet....my baby is growing up =( / my baby is growing up =) .....but I do know in my heart, he is making me proud!

Glorious Day!

I hope I am not jinxing anything here, but my 4 year old son has decided he is to big to sleep in mommy and daddy's bed! I know, why was he 4 sleeping there anyways...I've heard it a million times! We just could not put him in his room screaming until he fell asleep! We tried things over the years, but nothing stuck. The fact of the matter was, we were all sleeping and that was important overall to us! BUT........for some crazy reason that I love, he is on his third night of completely sleeping there, in his own bed, from falling asleep to waking, and I love him for it! Yahoo!
Feels good to stretch out at night!

New Coupons

Being the beginning of the month, the coupons at coupons.com have reset. I looked there a few days ago and found nothing. I just looked today and whoa! Great coupons! Some of my favorite coupons?
  • Pillsbury ready made dough. You can usually get these for under $1 and they have a long shelf life! I love doing this with the kids as a project. They roll the dough balls, we put sprinkles, chocolate chips, shapes....I mean the world is the limit here! There are no rules when it comes to homemade cookies!
  • Pillsbury pizza crusts. At least one store always has these on sale every week. They cost next to nothing. Also, a long shelf life! These are awesome! I always have cheese and some sort of canned tomatoes or sauce, so again...kid project. the sky is the limit here too!
  • Bars of soap. I admit, I am not very "brand loyal". I tend to be sick of things pretty quickly, so I like to switch it up! With these coupons, I rarely pay more than $1 for bars of soap!
  • There is a coupon for Bonne Bell Lipsmackers. I have tons of nieces who love these things...Great Birthday or Christmas gifts! Plan ahead!
  • Frosting and cake mix coupons. Again, these end up costing me under $1. For this much, I can bake a delicious cake and again, give the kids something to do. I also love the oven in these chilly months!
  • Soup. Does it get any easier than soup for lunch? These canned soups have come a long way too! They have a delicious french onion in the new Campbell's line! It is enough for me to heat a can of soup, eat half, then eat the other half the next day! These also end up costing around $1 or less, depending!
So, those are some of the ones I love and why. Just click on the "see all coupons" on the coupon box in the side bar and check the ones you want. Hit print and you are ready to go!

KMart is Doubling Coupons $2 and Less!

There is a little rumor going around that Kmart is doubling coupons up to $2! This means if you have a coupon for $2 off of something, it would double to $4 off that product! I am sure there are many things to be gotten for free here! I have two separate posts on this with more info.
  • Click here to see what Coupon Cravings is saying!
  • Click here to see what Cincinnati Cents is saying!
I have not gone, there really isn't a Kmart in my area. I know alot of friends and family that does have Kmart. My advice is to call your local store first to see if this is, indeed, true? There seems to be a lot of speculation. Wow....worth a phone call though if it is indeed true!

Works for Me Wednesday

This is a post for Works For Me Wednesday over at Rocks in My Dryer. Today's theme is kitchen organization. I have to say, I probably lack in this department, so I will be reading everyone else's tips!
The best tip I use that I have to offer is this. I have quite a large pantry with a lot of shelves. My organization tip I use in my pantry is to put the stuff I want the kids, (I have a 2 and 4 year old), to eat low, so they can grab things themselves. I place granola bars, cereal, raisins, cereal bars, fruit snacks, etc. down low. They tell me they are hungry and they can go in and grab a snack. The things I moderate, I put up high; i.e. chips, snack cakes, and messy things I do not want them to get into. This frees up a lot of the "Mom, can you help me's?" throughout the day. I also like knowing they are making food choices themselves at such a young age!

Dining Out

Dining out can be a very large expense these days. How nice is it though to have someone take care of your needs and no dishes at the end of a meal? I love dining out but we can not do it everyday! Here are a few tips and resources to help!
  • Here is a great resource to help lower your restaurant bill. You provide a zip-code and you will receive a list of local restaurants that offer children's specials. You can narrow your search to a day of the week, cuisine, city, etc. This can really help a budget. Think about it; even if you are going on vacation, you can enter the zip from the city you are visiting and find specials! Click here to check it out! It is free and no registration required! *The site supports all information they put on their site, however, they still suggest calling the restaurants to be sure the deal still stands. They provide phone numbers.
  • Do you have a Qdoba Mexican Grill nearby? Click here to sign up for their e-club program. You will receive a voucher for a free chips and salsa just for signing up! Also, a big surprise for your birthday! Get the latest news evites and offers right to your inbox!
  • Bob Evans has a coupon here for a free child's meal. You can only use one coupon per visit. Thanks Thrifty and Chic Mom!
Have any other deals you know about? Please let me know, so I can add to my post!

*TIP: Get another e-mail address for sites like stores, restaurants, places like this that may be sending deals, etc. that you can sift through when time allows. This way, your important e-mails, work, family, etc. aren't jumbled up with these "fun" e-mails!

Whole Foods

I know there is a big dilemma about suffering quality for quantity when you are working with a budget. We would all love to buy the best money can buy for our families, sometimes though, it is not always feasible to do that and stay within a budget. Well Whole Foods just did a Budget Recipe Challenge and I think, if you are interested in shopping there, it may be worth a look. The criteria for the recipes submitted was it had to be a budget friendly (under $4 a serving) meal that did not sacrifice taste. There are 6 finalist listed on their website, click here to see them! They also have the recipes on there too and the cost per serving! They are asking us to vote by leaving comments on the recipes. Your vote will get you entered into a drawing for $500 gift card to Whole Foods (wouldn't that be nice?). There are 10 runner ups that will receive a $25 gift card.
The catch...you have to register on their website. Might not be bad though if you can get deals e-mailed or sale items?

Archivers

If you are into scrap-booking, then this post is for you. Archiver's is offering classes for the holidays. You sign up, pay a small fee, use their supplies, etc. and get to leave with one-of-a-kind homemade things. They are focusing on the holidays right now, so the classes they are offering include gift tags, Christmas cards, and calenders. There are so many more too. The average cost of a class is $20. You will get to leave with some supplies and certain amount of what you made. Click here for more details, including times, dates, stores and phone numbers. What a great way to get some "mom" time and be productive at the same time!

Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes

Ok, we had a nice "fall" dinner on Sat. We decided to decorate our homes...you know, mums, pumpkins, bales of straw, etc... What could be better than eating a huge hearty meal when we were all done? Well, I prepared whole chickens, stuffed with apples and onions for flavor. They were seasoned with simple poultry seasoning. They were delicious!

As sides, I made the usual fresh green beans and rosemary potatoes...Yum. BUT, the star of the show was definitely the twice baked sweet potatoes! Who needs to serve dessert when you have these? Here's the recipe (or what you might want to call a recipe...I am an eyeball it sort of person!)

  • Preheat oven 350. Coat 4 large sweet potatoes with oil and bake for about an hour.

  • While the potatoes bake, mix 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup pecans and a dash of cinnamon in a bowl. These are rough estimates. Use more or less to your liking!
  • Chop 7 large marshmallows (or use small ones, about 5 or 6 per potato).
  • Pull the potatoes out when they feel a little "squishy" in your hand. I then put them in the freezer for about 20 minutes so they could cool and I could work with them easier.
  • Cut the potatoes in half and with a spoon, carve out the center of the sweet potato, leaving only the skins. Put all of the scooped potato in the bowl with the sugar, butter, nut mixture. Mix well.

  • Place the skins on a pan or in some sort of a baking dish (I used a pyrex casserole dish).

  • Scoop the sugar, butter, nut, potato mixture back into the skins. Top with the marshmallows.
Bake the "twice baked sweet potatoes" for about 30 minutes. I even turned the broiler on at the end for a few minutes to "roast" the marshmallows on top. These were really delicious and so easy to prepare!

Premiere News

Ok, no premieres tonight, but tomorrow night is gonna be another good night of new shows!

  • 8:00 p.m.
  • Pushing Daisies (ABC) I love this show! If you watched last season, you know it is so cute! It is about a guy who can bring people back to life with the touch of his finger. BUT, if he touches them again, they die forever! So, he sees the childhood love of his life on her death bed, touches her and she is alive! BUT, they fall in love again...remember if he touches her again, she dies! So, that is the premise. So cute and a bit odd! Try it out!
  • Friday Night Lights (DirecTV channel 101) Your typical Friday, high school football themed show..Reminds me of Varsity Blues. I never got into it, but I bet I am missing out!
  • 9:00 p.m.
  • Private Practice (ABC). Another one of my favorites. Addison Sheppard (Derek's ex from Grey's Anatomy) moves from Seattle Grace to California and works for a small clinic. Typical love, medical, friendship themed drama, but so cute! I will dvr this and keep up on it!
  • 10:00 p.m.
  • Dirty Sexy Money (ABC) About a wealthy and unscrupulous family who hires a lawyer to take over when their father dies. I think the title explains enough! I have never watched it, but I think it could be good, if you are into that kind of a thing.
Remember, click here to see the calender of remaining premiere shows! (Kath and Kim is next week!!!!!!!!!)

Stay tuned!

Sorry, the postings have been few and far between. I have been so busy with sickness and school and fall, I have been having a hard time posting consistently! But, I did make some twice baked sweet potatoes this weekend and yum....
stay tuned for the recipe (gotta get the pics up!)

Trader Joes Tuesday!

Tasty Thai Meals. Yummy and easy! These are delicious (if you are into thai food!) These come with the dish and rice to boot! All in a neat little "carryout" container! They take about 2 minutes to cook, and voila.....lunch!
Here's the best part...only 1.99 a box! I have seen similiar things in the grocery store for much more! Now that is a deal!

Authentic Italian!

So we had the pleasure of having a true authentic Italian meal last night! How was it authentic you ask? Well, one of the Saving Sisters had an awesome co-worker, who visited Italy, and was kind enough to bring her back seasoning, pasta and olive oil from there! This is from the real Italy! (as if there was a fake Italy, right?) Well, we cooked it last night and wow, it was delicious! Definitely different flavors! But so tangy, a little spicy, but overall, just so delicious!
We paired it with homemade garlic bread and our favorite brushcetta! Here's how we did it!

  • Homemade pasta sauce:
  • 3 small cans of tomato sauce
  • 2 cans of diced tomatoes
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 2 tbsp. REAL Italian seasoning (did I mention this was from Italy?)
  • Simmer

  • Pasta
  • 1 lb. pasta (from Italy, of course!=)
  • bring to a boil 8-10 minutes

  • Homemade garlic bread
  • 1 loaf of bread (italian, french, whatever you like)
  • 3 cloves of fresh garlic chopped
  • olive oil
  • Pre-heat oven 350 degrees. Cut loaf of bread in half. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle fresh garlic on top. Bake for about 10 minutes.
  • Our Favorite Bruschetta
  • Use homemade garlic bread recipe above
  • 1 8 oz bar of cream cheese
  • Handful of grated parmesan cheese
  • small can of chopped black olives
  • 2 roma tomatoes chopped
  • 6 basil leaves sliced julienne
  • Put cream cheese in microwave about 45 seconds (until soft enough to stir). Add parmesan cheese and sliced black olives. Spread cream cheese mixture over both halves of bread. sprinkle with tomatoes and basil.

Thats it! that was our "real Italian" feast. This truly was delicious! How do you make this at home? Well, we think the seasoning from Italy really was the star of the show, so we tried to figure what was in it. We decided it was:

  • Dried sliced garlic cloves (you could see them, they were quite large!)
  • Dried tomatoes and possibly sun dried tomatoes (this gave it the tang)
  • Dried basil
  • Some red pepper flakes (this gave it a small amount of heat)
  • Dried parmesan cheese
  • The rest is speculation. We are guessing the usual oregano, black pepper, parsley, etc.
I am going to try to make this seasoning homemade. If I succeed, I will post it. Real fresh ingredients I think is key and will be well worth the time and money spent!

Design (Decorating) Tip

As of this past Monday, fall is officially here!! As many of you start to pull out the fall decor'..here are a few suggestions to bring that warm, welcoming, cozy fall essence into your home.
  • Vase Fillers: These can do wonders! You can get vases just about anywhere ( I love what Pottery Barn has to offer, but do what works for you)! Add some fall fillers such as; acorns, pine cones, apples, pears, and various others. You could use several vases of various sizes as a centerpiece on the table, or they can stand alone as accents! You can even incorporate candles into these (with certain vases)...
  • Make Your Own Wreath: You can purchase the "bones" of the wreath at places such as; Micheal's or Hobby Lobby. Start with a wreath made of twigs and add your own arrangements by using artificial leaves, small plastic fruits and pumpkins, etc. All you need is a hot glue gun and you are on your way. It can be a fun project with the kids..and a way to express your own creativity!! It will also be one of a kind which is a major bonus.
  • Paint: If you are up to taking on the task of painting, Sherwin Williams offers some fabulous fall paint tones. There is a link of the side bar which will take you directly to their website where you can browse around for some color ideas!! You may even want to just do an accent wall.

Happy decorating!!

Flu Season

Flu season is approaching. I know, seems to early to say that (and too hot, for us anyways). But, it is officially fall, so it is time to start thinking about these things! Well, if you have a Meijer by you, you are in luck, they offer flu shots! I am not sure how much they are, I think it goes through your insurance, so I would call your insurance company and see.
Anyways, if you are interested, click here to see the full schedule of when they will be administering them at your local Meijer!

That brings me to my next question. Do you get flu shots for your kids? I have some seasons and have not others. I really do not know if I saw a difference? So, I am a little confused as to whether this is one more chemical thing to put into my kids or just to pass....
Let me know your thoughts, I am all ears!

It's Finally Here!

Ok, I have been waiting a long time for this! It is the season premiere of Greys Anatomy! Yeah, I need to see how this all pans out.. Anyways, let me cover them all to be fair!

  • 8:00 p.m.
  • Ugly Betty (ABC) A bright but out of the ordinary looking woman is like a fish out of the water working at a glitzy high end fashion magazine. This is funny. I watched for 2 seasons, then, for some reason, I didn't have time, but I wish I did and will try to make time this season!
  • Survivor:Gabon (CBS) This is for you dad! This is the 17th season! I remember Richard Hatch! Wow, well they are stranded in Gabon, Africa, competing for a cool million!
  • My Name is Earl (NBC) Also a father's fave! A petty crook sets out to make amends in his life. He thinks karma is everywhere and is trying to fix his wrong doings!
  • 9:00 p.m.
  • Grey's Anatomy (ABC) I love it!! Fifth season opener..will Meredith and Derek fall back in love? What will happen with the rest of the interns turned residents? Stay tuned...
  • The Office (NBC) This is also the fifth season opener which has Harry Crane punching in with Micheal Scott and co. at Dunder Mifflin.
  • 10:00 p.m.
  • ER (NBC) The beginning of the end. The final season of ER will have some surprise visits from old cast members...I am sure this season will be worth watching! I used to watch so long ago, but then life happened and I had to pick and choose. But, I really think this will be a good one!
There it is, the Thursday line-up....stay tuned for Sundays line-up...It's gonna be good!

Things We Love Thursday!!

Ok, the thing that I love is...my unlimited text messaging package on my cell phone! That probably sounds funny, but it is absolutely something I could not live without! Text messaging is great. I feel like many people are scared..they are not sure how to send a text, etc. It's a technological fear...I had it once too. But once I got over it, I had to switch to the plan. Here are the reasons you should try texting:

  1. It is only around $5 to add the unlimited feature on your phone. Check with your service provider.
  2. My nieces and nephews are beginning to get cell phones (they are rounding the teenage years) and it is a great way to communicate with them! They do not want to talk (they are a little "busy" these days) but they will answer a text in a second! They look cool, you get to find out how they are, etc. and everyone is happy
  3. My husband can reply to my normal questions (when will you be home, when should I have dinner ready, what do you want for dinner, can you get some milk on your way home, etc.) while he is at work. I used to try to call, missing him most of the time for various reasons. Now he almost always replies!
  4. I cannot talk on the phone! As soon as the phone hits my ear, the kids think it suddenly means "NO RULES HOUR>>>GO CRAZY!!!". So, when I need some important info., even just a "hi, everything ok?", I can get it.....shoot a text, one comes back and the kids did not even know I conversed with someone other than them!
So, there it is...all the reasons I love texting! It really is a great feature! You should try it out if you have not yet!

More from the book of Titus

Last Sunday we continued more on the book of Titus. You see, our pastor is currently preaching a series called "The Church God Always Wanted". Each Sunday is a part of the series and we are currently focusing on Titus; as this is one of the book's that focuses on setting up the church. (Still applies to every church, as they are constantly changing and growing).

This book reminds us that by living God honoring lives, we are teaching new Christians (whether we realize it or not). Leading by example....

Titus 2: 7-8

7 And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. 8 Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us.

The pastor made a comment that I think that I will always remember. He said, "sometimes people live lives that are a mile wide an only an inch deep". Wow, what a true statement!! People can become so concerned with filling up their lives...and making them a "mile wide". But without substance....

He also reminded us that the way in which we live our lives today, is the way that we will be remembered. Truly something to think about.....

Works for Me Wednesday

Clean smelling sponges:
I am posting this for Works for me Wednesday over at Rocks in My Dryer.
Ok, this is gonna sound weird, but I cannot stand kitchen sponges that have even the slightest odor. So, I have a few solutions.
  1. Rinse your sponges with Hydrogen Peroxide. (I used to do this, but I have a new system)
  2. I have 2 sponges. One is in the sink ( I do the cleaning and disinfecting with this one), and one is in the dishwasher (waiting to be washed). So, when I run the dishwasher, the one that was in there is clean and fresh and comes out and the other one goes in. I run my dishwasher about once a day, so I always have a clean sponge. This is environmentally friendly too. I can keep a sponge for awhile! They never really get the chance to get too dirty!
